In October, parents from Prince Edward Island will be trained in the Parent Reading Coach model. Tiffany Bastin will work with parents to help them be a part of improving their children’s reading skills.

St.Mary’s First Nation Community Parent Reading Coaches Training

Four parents have taken on the role of becoming reading coaches at Chief Harold Sappier Memorial Elementary School. The coaches have participated in three training sessions and will meet January to plan for hosting two community sessions for all parents. Allison Brooks, the principal of the school had this to say: ”Parents, as well as staff here at CHSMES, are very excited about this initiative. They feel this training will be very beneficial to our students and the parents of our community.”

Reading Coach Program to be Adopted in PEI

The Home and School Organization in PEI are interested in integrating the program into their schools. On April 19th, reading coaches Valery Delorey, Charlotte Thurber and Tiffany Bastin will visit PEI to speak at the annual Home and School meeting. Suggestions for implementing a similar program in PEI will be considered.

Team at Hubbard Working on Common Reading Practices

In early September, new lead teacher Lusinda Frost offered an in-service to the staff of Hubbard School. They discussed the common reading comprehension strategies that the school will implement throughout the year. The staff was impressed to see the guided reading video and look forward to implementing common best practices.

Parent Reading Coaches Visit University of New Brunswick (UNB) Class

Our Parent Reading Coaches, Charlotte Thurber and Valerie Delorey visited a class of future educators. Students were impressed by their passion for learning, helping students, and the level of commitment to their program. UNB student Louise-Andree Holt shared her thoughts on the guests: “… I was very impressed with Valerie and Charlotte. It was great to see their enthusiasm for the school, the literacy program and education in general. I was also impressed with their ownership of the program.”

Another UNB student, Sherry Howley had this to say: “It was so great to listen to the two parents because they shed light on the importance of parental involvement. The two mothers demonstrate the importance of communicating with parents and having them involved in their child’s education. What was a “lightbulb” moment for me was when one woman had said that what she liked best about being involved in your program is that they are able to use the same language that teachers use in their classrooms with their child. This makes so much sense. If parents are using the same language and skills that teachers are using in the classroom then parents are better equipped to help their child.”

Educator Visits from Northern New Brunswick

On June 12, a teacher from District 15 came to view Hubbard’s Literacy program and look at how students, teachers, and parents work collaboratively to improve student learning. Jennifer Drake Grass had this to say about the program: “I can’t get over how consistent your program is. Having parents know exactly what teachers are teaching and using the same language has certainly impacted students. You can see the confidence kids have here in their reading.”

Several resources were shared with Ms. Drake Grass, including the Parent Reading Coach training manual, and our school-wide reading strategies. We look forward to more visits in the fall.

Parent Reading Coaches Recognized

On Friday, May 30th, our Parent Reading Coaches received recognition and certificates for their commitment to the success of this program. Mary Buchanan, Valerie Delorey, Charlotte Thurber, Stacey Long, Tracey Moore, and Tammy Saulis volunteered over 90 hours this year to work with students and parents. This core group has trained over forty other parents and already have a waiting list for next year’s program. Read the comments below from our Parent Reading Coaches.

More Visitors to Hubbard from School District 15

More educators have visited Hubbard School to view the literacy program. The guests remarked on how welcoming the staff and students were and the positive climate in the school. The Grade Four literacy block was observed as well as the reciprocal reading model in the literacy room. Students proudly displayed their strategy use and shared their writing with our guests.

School District 6 Observes Hubbard’s Literacy Program

Seven educators from Hampton Elementary visited the Grade four team today to see what we’re doing in literacy. “Your program is very impressive,” said Linda McCarten, a grade five visiting teacher. Our guests visited the grade four classrooms, the literacy room, the resource room and our alternate setting, where literacy groups were in action as well. The visiting educators requested materials for writing and also received a copy of our Parent Reading Coach training manual. We look forward to another group of educators from District 15 tomorrow!
